Accomplished Teaching and Leading
to Improve Learning for ALL
All educators can enhance and transform teaching and learning
for every student, every day by engaging with the National Board Standards and resources, whether or not they are already board certified, eligible for certification, or choose to certify. |
Why use the National Board resources to
support professional learning?
Equity |
Specific to Student Needs |
Created by teachers that work with students, the National Board resources focus on knowing, studying, and improving for each student, with each student. Both teachers and students benefit through the learning partnership supported by the National Board resources.
|
The National Board Standards and related resources have all been created by teachers connected to students. As a result, each is relevant to student needs, guiding educators with specific examples of how to impact students across multiple contexts.
|
Proven Impact |
Networked Support |
Over a decade of research across multiple settings has measured the impact of teachers who have achieved National Board certification, as assessed against the National Board Standards and resources. The large base of existing research measures the impact of board certified teachers have in classrooms after engaging in intensive professional learning with the National Board resources.
|
This work stems from the innovative work of schools and districts in the Network to Transform Teaching (NT3). NT3 is anchored in the National Board's longstanding promise to the field to be by teachers, for teachers. Using the Networked Improvement Community model, NT3 relies on the wisdom of practitioners at the school, district, and state levels to develop resources and strategies that will bring accomplished, Board-certified teaching to scale. By 2020, NT3 intends to have over 1,000 schools, 100 districts, and 10 states participating in the network. In joining this work, you are joining a broader community of schools across the country.

How can the National Board resources be used?
The National Board Standards were created for individual professional growth through board certification. We are innovating to create and adapt resources for individuals, teams, schools, and districts to use for professional learning.
Implementation Models
National Board Professional Learning Schools |
District Systems |
Individual Engagement |
In 2017, Kentucky began piloting National Board Professional Learning Schools in partnership with the National Board. Schools can use the National Board resources to improve systems and professional learning, whether or not they are an official NBPL Pilot School.
|
Districts of varying size with varying needs have created systems to support educator growth across the career continuum using the National Board resources. Building the capacity of educators to lead the growth of other educators in the system, districts strategically strengthen the entire community.
|
Individuals can engage with resources for their own or shared professional learning experiences. Many of National Board professional learning resources were created by individuals who are not in school or districts piloting work.
|
What are the National Board resources?
The foundational National Board resources include the 5 Core Propositions, the Architecture of Accomplished Teaching, and Certificate Area Standards, and the What Teachers Should Know and Be Able to Do Book. Together, these resources provide educators guidance and specific examples of how to be the best teacher for each child, each day, in each setting. Using the foundational documents and related supporting resources, schools and districts can support the professional learning of all educators.
Who can benefit from engaging with the National Board resources?
All educators...and ultimately all students.
Professional Educator Career Continuum
The National Board resources support educators as they move through the career continuum
to ensure that all students gain access to accomplished teaching.
to ensure that all students gain access to accomplished teaching.
As teachers we use the many sources of professional knowledge, skill and experience at our disposal to engage the minds and hearts of children and youth by teaching and inspiring them. And once we mess with the minds and hearts, we are prepared to take responsibility for the messes we have made, the dreams we inspired, the minds we have brought to life, the prejudices we have forestalled, and the society to which we have given hope." - Dr. Lee Shulman
